Discussing the pioneering style and popular success of Johann Ernst Galliard.
Virtuoso oboist and composer Johann Ernst Galliard was one of a wave of talented young artists who emigrated to London in the first decades of the 18th century. In a music scene that included superstars like Handel and Geminiani, Galliard was himself a formidable presence. His compositions include charming sonatas, notable forays into all-sung english opera, and music for wildly popular pantomimes that remained in the repertory through into the 1790s.
